Bartender’s Choice: Summer Slingshot

The calendar may say that autumn has already arrived, but in Arizona know that summer lasts a little bit longer. Although temperatures across The Valley may be slightly descending, it seems the time is right to enjoy a lite, warm-weather sipper. Here, Conor Cook shares with us how to make The Summer Slingshot, a refreshing and easy-to-drink, low ABV cocktail suited for the season’s lackadaisical transition.

Low ABV cocktails are experiencing a moment. Partner this new trend with the resurgence of an iconic Italian spirit and you’ve got a delicious cocktail that is bound to be a hit, at the bar and at home.

 

Ingredients

Those who have a knack for home bartending will likely have the following ingredients. For those who would like to try their hand at cocktail-making, most of these ingredients can be picked up at your favorite local liquor store or speciality grocer. Dimmi Liquore, widely considered Italy’s answer to absinthe and gin, makes for a unique aperitif option that meshes wonderfully with the intensely aromatic and fresh taste of Carpano Bianco of Milan, Italy.  

Here is what you will need to get started.

1-ounce Dimmi Liquore di Milano Italian aperitif

1-ounce Carpano Bianco vermouth

Rhubarb bitters

½ ounce lime juice

¼ ounce simple syrup

Grapefruit juice

Soda water

Grapefruit peel

Begin by filling a tall cocktail glass with ice. Next, combine all of your ingredients, minus the soda water and grapefruit juice, in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Give it a good shake, a minimum of 30-seconds, then pour your mixture into your tall glass. Add a splash of grapefruit juice and soda water. To complete your cocktail, garnish with fresh grapefruit peel.
